StFX Athletics honors 2012-13 CIS Academic All-Canadians

The StFX Department of Athletics honored its 2012-13 CIS Academic All-Canadians Tuesday morning at their annual celebratory breakfast. This year there were a record-high 67 CIS Academic All-Canadians, those student-athletes who have achieved an 80% average or above while competing for a varsity team.

This year’s event was dedicated in the memory of Melissa Landry, former X-Women volleyball athlete who passed away in December in a tragic motor vehicle accident. Melissa was honored as a two-time Academic All-Canadian.

Out of the possible 294 eligible student-athletes who consumed CIS eligibility by participating on a varsity team at StFX during the 2012-13 season, 23% achieved CIS Academic All-Canadian status, including 21 male student-athletes and 46 females. This year’s total surpassed the previous high of 58 Academic All-Canadians in 2007-08.

There were 34 first-time Academic All-Canadians, 19 student-athletes who received the honor for the second time in their career, and eight student-athletes who were three-time Academic All-Canadians. Five StFX student-athletes were honored as an Academic All-Canadian for the fourth time in their varsity career including cross country/track & field runners Natalie Kannenberg and Zach MacDonald, soccer athlete Kirsten Desjardins-Lorimer, volleyball athlete Maria Dunphy and hockey athlete Brennan Wray.  Former X-Women volleyball athlete Catherine Thornton received the prestige of being the lone five-time CIS Academic All-Canadian.

The Academic All-Canadians were honored at a celebratory breakfast at the Charles V. Keating Centre where they received a certificate from Canadian Interuniversity Sport and the Governor General of Canada’s office, along with a gift from the Department of Athletics. All student-athletes were encouraged to invite a faculty member to accompany them to the breakfast.

The event was held in conjunction with StFX Athletics annual Faculty Appreciation Week, taking place February 3-9, 2014. All current and retired faculty members will be admitted free of charge to all varsity games taking place this week as a thank you for their support.

Note:  Any recent graduates who were 2012-13 CIS Academic All-Canadians are asked to please email Pat MacGillivray at pmacgill@stfx.ca with thier home mailing address in order to receive thier certificates and gifts.
