X-Men football welcomes Jon Svec as new defensive coordinator

Antigonish, NS— X-Men football head coach Gary Waterman is pleased to announce the appointment of Jonathon (Jon) Svec as StFX's new defensive coordinator.

"I am thrilled to add Jon Svec as our new defensive coordinator," comments Coach Waterman. "We have worked together a long time and I have great confidence in him. He works extremely hard, and is passionate about the game of football."

"In 2016 he served as our linebacker coach and did an outstanding job. The fact that he knows our system and is familiar with our players and the way we operate is a tremendous benefit. I look forward to continuing our defensive success under his guidance."

Coach Svec re-joined the X-Men coaching this past fall having previously coached with the X-Men program from 2008 to 2012 where he spent four seasons as the defensive coordinator and two seasons as the special teams coordinator. Svec coached a number of All-Canadian athletes, including President's Trophy winner and first overall CFL draft pick Henoc Muamba.

An East-West Bowl coach from 2008 to 2012, Svec was the defensive coordinator for the East team in the 2012 game. As a player he spent five seasons playing linebacker for the University of Waterloo where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English language and literature in 2007. In addition to his StFX coaching duties, Svec is also currently coaching in the provincial system for Team Nova Scotia.

He is looking forward to the new coaching opportunity commenting, "I am extremely excited to be taking on this new role with the X-Men football team."

"I have had the great fortune over the years to witness firsthand the passion and pride associated with this university and its athletic program, and I am thrilled at the opportunity to help further those traditions. The positive culture that Coach Waterman has created within this football program is truly something special, and I am honoured to be able to continue working with this organization as we strive to reach our ultimate goals."
