StFX curlers compete at Subway AUS Championship

FREDERICTON, NB – The X-Women and X-Men curling teams competed at the Subway AUS Championship at the Capital Winter Club this past weekend. There will be a new women’s champion crowned as the defending champion X-Women did not qualify for the playoff round.

In round robin play, the X-Women squad, skipped by Emma Logan, finished with a 1-5 record. Coached by Carolyn Rose, also competing with Logan were third Lauren MacFadyen, second Ashley Francis, lead Therese McCurdy, spare Sarah Snair.

In Thursday action the X-Women lost a close 6-5 match to Dalhousie then came back with a 6-5 win over Saint Mary’s. They fell to Memorial 7-6 and UNB 4-2 on Friday in two more close games. On Saturday, they were defeated by Mount Allison 8-2 and UPEI 8-6.

Moving on to the semifinals were Mount Allison (5-1) versus UPEI (5-1), along with Dalhousie (5-1) against Memorial (3-3).

On the men’s side, the X-Men, skipped by Josh Henderson, wrapped up round robin play with a 1-4 record.

Coached by Peter Beaton, the X-Men squad consisted of third Ethan Anderson, second Kyle Walker, and lead Tyson Collier, along with Henderson.

The X-Men started the competition with an 8-2 loss to the defending champion Memorial Sea-Hawks on Thursday. They then fell 8-3 to Saint Mary’s and 9-1 to UNB on Friday, before defeating Acadia 8-6 on Saturday morning. They wrapped up round robin play with a 7-2 loss to Dalhousie.

Advancing to the semifinals were the host UNB Varsity Reds (4-1) against Memorial (3-2), as well as Saint Mary’s (2-3) versus Dalhousie (5-0).

The semifinal games were being played Sunday morning followed by the women’s and men’s championship games at 1:00 pm.
